How did the Amigurumi phenomenon in Japan come about?

Japan is known for its millennial weaving techniques, such as Kasuri and Shibori, widely used in the textile industry.
Crochet and knitting are techniques brought from the West and were used by the samurai to make socks with fingers that allowed them
greater freedom of movement.
Already the creation of crochet dolls, known today as Amigurumi
emerged in the 1980s with the development of graphics and
the advent of kawaii culture.

At that time, the market began to focus on young female and store shelves were flooded with cute and sweet products such as the kitten Hello Kitty, in addition to other characters. With strong demand for kawaii things, women's magazines began to publish step-by-step recipes on how to create amigurumi and on January 10, 2002 the first Japanese Amigurumi Association was created.

What does the word Amigurumi mean?

Amigurumi probably originated from the junction of the words "Ami", which has several meanings, among them "knitting" or "knit" and "Nuigurumi" means "stuffed animals." That is, Amigurumi means literally "knitting stuffed animals".

Although Aminomo means knitting or knitting, Amigurumi can be made with knitting or crochet techniques. In addition to the crochet thread or wool ball, other materials are used as cotton to make the stuffing. The little eyes can be buttons, those of plastic that imitate real eyes or do with the same line itself.
The head, trunk, and limbs generally have spherical or cylindrical shapes. In some cases, wires are used in the joints to keep the doll in specific positions. Amigurumi can take on a variety of forms, but it is often emphasized that the head and eyes are generally larger than the rest of the body.

Amigurumi have varying sizes, but are usually between 10 and 30cm. The making of an amirugumi in crochet is made with medium thread or wool, and needle 4mm. In spite of the variety of techniques that can be used, the prevailing one is the use of low allied to the magic ring that avoids the hole next to the center of the ball, besides invisible reductions known as invisible decrease to maintain the consistency of the point preventing the filling leak.

I hope you like it, kisses
