Since I usually stitch with a lamp over my shoulder, when I am working on dark canvas, I move my lamp a little to accentuate the shadow made by the holes and I make sure to have a light surface underneath my frame.  I have tried a lap lamp but did not like it...

White towel or tablecloth over your lap and definitely use Q-snaps and enough light :)

I agree, stitch in daylight, and if possible wear very light clothes ie white pants/shorts/skirt.

I can't stitch on dark fabric anymore but if I want to make a small design on dark fabric I use white or ecru and stitch the background with black or navy floss - one thread, whole cross stitch and am quite satisfied with it.

I like stitching with black fabric because the colours look great, daytime stitching and white material or light from behind make it much quicker.
enjoying reading the ideas here too.. as dark colours are my favourites

Currently stitching on black aida with 3 strands and it is hellishly difficult. Tried light above and light under and both hurt my eyes. Not game enough to risk talc but I'll definitely try a white cloth on my lap next time. Thanks for the tip!

I have a daylight lamp that I use when stitching on dark backgrounds, position a lamp under you where you happen to be stitching to gaze onto the fabric but not enough to blind you, works for me x
