Shawl is customizable. It is knit from the center out, using Judy's Magic Cast on.
The instructions are to use "two different needles" and for anyone who has never done this kind of cast on (or knitting with two "different" needles), it just sounds like "use two needles."
You're using two separate circular needles and you should make sure the two sets are different e.g. one metal set and one wooden set so the needles are distinguishable. When you knit one side of the shawl, you should always be using one set.
If the two sets look alike (even if one set has a red cable and the other has a clear cable, with all the stitches you won't notice until it's too late) and you lose track of which needle you're using, when you reach the section when you pick up the other needle, you'll be very sad because you've just knitted all of the stitches OFF one needle. Don't ask me how I know. :P
Always, always make sure you're knitting with both ends of the same needle. Let the other needles just hang there until you get to the other side.
Calls for fingering although this one knit in Elsbeth Lavold's Silky Wool is beauitful and would be very toasty.
