I fell in love with Veera Valimaki's shawl pattern: Secret of Change. I think I am on my 12th shawl from that pattern. I've made it in the original fingering weight, but have also made it in sport, Aran, and bulky weight yarns. I love it so much.
I have knitted all of my life and I'm now a grandmother. I love knitting all sorts of patterns and can design and write patterns. But that pattern has really become my favorite. You start with 3 stitches and it grows on one side for the entire width of the shawl. It has short rows with eyelets and the whole thing is in garter stithc. Just awesome!
If you knit it in fingering or sport weight, it can easily be worn as a scarf OR a shawl. I love making this of Noro yarns with the long color repeats. My favorite of those so far has been Taiyo Sport. Noro fingering weight yarns: Silk Garden, Taiyo, and probably others, are great worked in this pattern, too, but solids also work. With those long color repeat yarns, there is striping, but it curves and is just gorgeous!
On some of the shawls I've put a crocheted edging around it, but it depends on the overall look. I decide once I've finished the knitting whether an edging is even needed. |
