Both programs have a pretty good help file.  Start there and create something small.

Do either of them turn a regular picture into a cross stitch? I want to make a pic into a pattern, I tried pic2pat but my picture has a lot of browns and didn't do a good job for me.

PCS made good files when they were HUGE charts.  The best charts needed to be like 15 inches wide doing one over one on 28 ct fabric...  Enormous!  The most successful one I had was a tiny, simple picture, and I wasn't wanting to cross stitch that one.  The Magic Doll drawings are originally around 3", and the cross stitch ends up around 7" when completed on 14 ct.  I don't have a ton of tiny pictures.

I use PC Stitch but not for cross-stitch.  I use it for graphs to crochet afghans.  Have made some really pretty ones
