What is Digest please?

Hello all,

I am just wondering what the "Digest" part of our membership is please? Can anyone please explain this to me or point me in the right direction where I can read about it?

A digest is a thread that is given special recognition for being outstanding.
Digests are awarded by moderators and are rare.

This just solved a VERY old doubt I had in my life, non forum related, of course!
We had the "Reader's Digest" magazine here in my country and it kept the english name. I always wondered what "digest" was about, but by the time the internet grew big I never looked into it. Bumping into this thread accidentally answered my question (on another note I also wondered what it meant here).

Readers digest just wasn’t outstanding though. It was boring. My grandparents used to get it and it was dull. It was always readers digest which was there to read in the dentists waiting room, too lol

Why are they called digests, though? Is it a quirk of the translation? There's nothing about the word digest to me that would imply something is outstanding or worthy of praise or special award. I hear that word and I think of the bodies physical process of digestion.

I wonder if they call them digest like the digestives in England, which are like cookies or smt like that hahhaa.
