When beginning a new craft, how do you go about it?

Do you gather/buy what you need to try it out first? Or do you jump in head first and buy all the interesting things you think you might need in order to do the craft to the extent you have in mind up front before even beginning?

I am a little bad on thinking I need everything and purchasing a whole heap of things I quite possibly will never use. They sit around for a long time and I either give them away, sell them, or they sit about in a draw gathering dust :o

What about you?

I have a bad habit of getting excited about a new craft and buying way too many supplies. Then I'll burn out on the craft in a month or two and pack up all the supplies before rotating to another craft/project. The good news is, when I rotate back around to that craft, I already have everything I need ;P
