You want a needle size that will slightly open the hole in the fabric, which prevents the thread from becoming frayed. The sizes listed are just a suggestion.

Very helpful.

I made a series of needlebooks, one for each type and size of needle. I cross stitched the sizes and type names on the back of the needlebook so I can always find the right needle for the right job

That is a fabulous idea! I may have to try that myself. I know that I have bought nearly a dozen gold needles size 24, 26, and 28 so that I don't have to re-thread so often. I found a Threaded needle  Details Reply Post time 2013-6-6 03:44

Wish I would have found this years ago.  It took me awhile to figure out I prefer petite tapestry needles in the smaller sizes.  Those are the kind that come with cross stitch kits and I love working with them.
