What a shame. I am sure this has happened to each of us at some time.
Hope you can save the cute guy.
If it was me, I might attach it to a piece of felt and whip stitch it over the edges.

He is such a cute little guy it would be a shame to throw him out... If it had happened to me I think I would try Sallyroses idea and attach him to a piece of felt. :)

I love him. I think I would embrace the fraying and incorporate it into my finish.

You could lace him to a piece of foam core or cardboard and make him into a flat fold?!   At least your stitching wont go to waste.   Ive had this happen to me so I know how hard it is to think of how to fix it!
