If you cant find them in your local store, you can buy them online quite easily. I prefer them because Im allergic to nickel (so have to be careful with normal needles) & I find the gold eye makes threading the needle much easier. Id like to try platinum sometime though.
I got my gold plated needles at Michaels! I didnt know that there were any benefits besides the appearance though. I prefer to use gold because they made me feel more fancy ;P
Totally agree with the Bohin needles...they are the best :)
Im glad someone posted about this.I saw some of the gold DMC needles at a nearby craft store, but I wasnt sure if they were any good.
Im currently using some of the Boye cross-stitch needles, but Im going to look for the other kinds mentioned here.
theylast a lot longer than the normal ones
My problem is now that I lose them as often as I lose regular needles. Doh!! :Q
Ive bought a bunch from Amazon.I cant answer your second question because Ive only just started my first cross stitch :)

Ive tried john jamespetite gold needle, but I like pony better, it glides through the fabric really well, and the gold plated durable, not easily wears off..love it .pony its an indian brand, personal preference
I tried several different brands of needles: DMC, Bohin, John James and Anchor. DMC for me was the worst idea ever lol. I like the John James needles the best as I can thread my floss very easily through the eye without the thread feeling like its snagging, while Bohin and Anchor snags a bit.
