This is how I do it too - I havent had a problem with melting any metallic thread using the cotton setting.

Yes exactly, with a towel between your iron and the aida you should not have any problem, the towel will protect the aida and the threads.

I iron it at the cotton stand 30 degrees and let it a bit wet, lay it flat to dry, your work looks then so good. :)
