Im a newbie cross stitcher and Im using dmc needles and threads. I had no idea which needles were good but just bought sizes 24 and 26 and I do like them a lot.
I would also suggest you buy some thread heaven which Ive just discovered. The thread is easier to work with and less knots when cross stitching.Separating each strand is so much easier too, Im not fighting with the thread as much lol

Wow!I have only ever used the ones that came with the kit...or that I could find for the cheapest price at my local bargain store. Now I feel like a bit of a slacker :P

I too buy Bohin needles size #26 and #28 from Anitas Little Stitches online and have been buying them in bulk for years. The price is right and Ive never found a better needle and I honestly think Ive tried just about every brand available in the US. My experience with the gold is similar to most too, the gold finish comes off quickly and they dont work any better or longer than the Bohin that I get at a fantastic price.
