I grid to keep my place on my chart and mark an X over that 10x10 grid square when one is complete.I don't generally highlight or color as I go though. The exception is if I find I made a mistake somewhere I will use an erasable highlighter to remind me to go fix it later and once the mistake is fixed I can erase the highlighter.

I use two different highlighters and start each stitching session with the alternate colour to last time so I know how much I stitch each time.

I have learned to make a copy and then use pencil to make notes and mark off

Always make a copy of your pattern! It would be a shame to destroy (to dirt or sth like that). I paint over crosses I've already made with pencil. It's more clearly (to me) which part is done. When grid isn't very visible - bold it (better with red or other vivid colour).

I have started using the erasable crayola crayons that are in the form of a pen.Now I don't have to worry about a marker leaking.

of course if work on a copy. I use different colored pensils. I'm afraid to stain the cloth with markers, so i haven't tried that system yet
