I go by what the instructions/pattern says. Im a new stitcher though (well, new again lol) so I am only using kits at the moment. Hopefully soon I can use kits/fabric with the design already on it ready to stitch (or learn how to copy to the fabric) so I can go top to bottom, left to right, as it seems like it would be much easier for me.

Start in the middle so that the design sits in the middle of the fabric and leaves plenty of space to frame.

I like to start from the left hand top corner, because i was always scared if i started in the middle i would not have any border fabricleft

I start by marking the middle, sometimes will start from there, sometimes will work from the top left to the bottom right, depends on the project.
