Yarn winder?
Looking to buy 1. Best ideas where to find 1? I have a heavy metal one I bought in China from ebay a few years back and this is a sturdy one which makes really nice cones to knit from, so it is a good investment…couple of weeks ago I also tried one of these cheapo 10 bucks plastic machines you can buy at aliexpress or temu, like you see all the teenagers use on youtube and tiktok, and well it does the job but is crappy to handle and doesnt make such nice stiff cones like the metal one, the thread is quite loose and tends to unravel from the cone I have a Stanwood metal winder and it's the best! online shopping sissy try amazon or shein Invest in a Standwood THANK YOU VERY MUCH i saw mostly are like an umbrella,or if the amount is not too much ,you can simply tide figure 8 I had a cheap Knit Picks winder that fell apart pretty quickly.I found the brand named "Royal" got good reviews and was reasonably priced and bought it.Ive been using it with an umbrella swift for over 2 years and no problems. I not sure where youre shopping but most of the larger online yarn stores in the US carry them.Hope that helps, good luck
I second jademonkey, I have a Royal-style winder, with the box printed in Japanese (Ive ordered it from a French site a couple of years ago). It works smoothly. I ordered mine from ebay. Not the best, sometimes it pinches the yarn while winding up, but works if Im careful. I bought to boxes for my threads, the winder was a very strong one.
In a few second your thread is on the bobbin, I use pastic bobbins.

What you have described is called a swift.It is used with a ball winder sometimes, but is not the same thing.Swifts are for hanging an opened skein of yarn on (after you open it sort of like an umbrella, thus the name) and then you can either wind the ball in your hands, or wind into a center pull skein on a ball winder.
My ball winders were made by Toyota - who used to make knitting machines and might still.They used to ship the machines over inside of their cars, or so a dealer once told me!
