Use other patterns like criss cross in crochet

Hi,
Did anyone already used criss cross pattern in crochet. I want to do the cheshire (Alice in wonderland) applique, and i can only find criss cross pattern. If you did, can you please explain how you transformed criss cross in crochet. Thank you.

With tunisian crochet you can cross-stitch right on top of it because the stitches form a nice grid, but regular crochet stitches dont quite line up the same way.
