Hi Sally Sue.I have only ever used 2 strands on any of the 16, 18 or 20.I dont recall if Ive ever gone larger than 20 Aida. Also, Ive never purchased because of a sale, I have only purchased because of the pattern I have wanted to work. However, I would go ahead and purchase the sale because if you dont have a particular project in mind, you can figure it out later after you get the fabric and you can work a tiny bit to see exactly how many strands you will look best. Many years ago, I used to belong to a monthly magazine for cross stitch. As I got more involved in crochet and knit, I cancelled the subscription.I think nowadays were I to actively do a counted cross stitch pattern, it would come in a kit - all the mystery is then removed. :)Buy the cloth; certainly you will find use for it in future.

I have used 20 ct. Aida (1 strand) for a monochrome and ornament:
Zweigart 3326 Aida extra fine - 264, 306, 3021 colours.

However, 3348 Newcastle 40 ct. is even better, like any evenweave fabriс, but more expensive and less choice of colors.

I have used 2 strands on 14 and 16, 1 strand on 16, 18 and 20 Aida. Sulta Hardanger 22 very difficult for me.
