Averna was designed to feature the new Tibetan Cloud yarn from mYak, a light and airy Tibetan-breed wool that makes for the perfect wear-all-day shawl, providing a light layer that doesn’t need to be taken off indoors.
With that in mind, I created a medium sized shawl. It’s one that can stay on all day, indoors or out. Although is is long enough to feel cozy, the light fabric and shorter tails allow it to remain out of the way when I perform a task, and it can be tucked tighter around my neck or go easily into a coat without adding bulk or getting in the way of my zippers.
I also wanted Averna to be somewhat delicate, but not too lacy. I added panels of 1x1 ribs up each side of the shawl, for an unusual design feature that separates the lace edges from a garter stitch center, and when they are combined with garter and just a touch of lace, the shawl is delicate but not too fussy.
I had a little fun at the shawl tip, where the different elements are established, and I love the lines that the beginnings of the rib sections create on either side of center. The lace is an easily memorized repeat, and once the ribs are setup, knitting goes by quickly!
The shawl is easily knit larger or smaller, and could be worked in a heavier or lighter weight fiber (like the mYak Medium??) . If you wanted more width without the proportional length, I’ve included a note about working extra increases at a rate that would widen the shawl as well.
One more fun thing about this design is that the lace allows you to block the tip as you see here, in a somewhat triangle-y shape - OR you can lie the lace flat, without pulling the center down for an inverted V. You can see the V in some of the test knits!
