17 sts = 10 cm / 4” in st st in the rnd on 5 mm / US 8
20 sts x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” herringbone stitch on 8 mm / US 11
Needle size
5 mm / US 8 for st st (smaller needles)
8 mm / US 11 for herringbone stitch (bigger needles)
4,5 mm / US 7 for neckband
Crochet hook: approx. 5-7 mm / H-8 - L-11 (the size is not important as it’s only used for the provisional cast on)
Swatching
It is important to swatch in herringbone stitch and stockinette as the two stitches should have the same measurements on the sweater but doesn’t have the same gauge

The Bregne Sweater is inspired by the beautiful shape of fern found in the forest where I live. Bregne means fern in Danish.
The overall body shape is based on an old favourite sweater that I love to wear because of the easy boxy t.
I chose a rustic, plump, worsted weight yarn to really show o the beautiful herringbone stitch.
The body is worked from the upper back towards the neck opening, the neck opening is shaped, then down the front for the length of the arm opening. Stitches are then picked up from the upper back and worked down for the length of the arm opening. Once both front and back are the same length the pieces are joined and worked in the round. The sleeves are worked bottom up and then seamed to the body but can easily be worked top down. Finally a small rolled hem is worked as the neckline.
