I hate thimbles too.I also hate sore fingers.My solution is this:
It is a press on thimble pad that you put only where the needle rubs or causes problems.It is of leather.You can use it many times.

On top of that I put these:
Finger Gloves

They even let me sort beads when I wear them because of the texture and the bumps on them.They are sized to fingers from small to large to thumb. I can also wash them to keep them clean.Just wash your hands like normal with them on. In this case they add protection to the fingers so they do not get sore and they hold the leather thimble pads in place very very well.
I sometimes forget I am wearing them and after I put the stitching away, I realize they are still on while I am doing something else.Very comfortable.So comfortable I forget them.
If you need to trim them to fitsimply take a pair of scissors and cut.I cut a bit off the bottom for myself.It is more comfortable if they are above the knuckle of the hand in my case.
