I think there has to be a better solution than punishing new members with minus points.
I have seen this several times now, it is certainly not a good method.
A first email would definitely be a better step

@DuckeydThe reason you shouldnt comment in posts under moderation is we, the mods, use the comments to alert of issues.
Sometimes users leave comments that are very useful to the mods, when they spot duplicates or even alert of errors in the uploads.
You @greenteas do this a lot and you have never been rated negatively or had coins removed.
So a comment is welcome if you need to alert the mods of an issue with thread, but random "thank you" comments clutter everything, and make our work harder.
Please do not comment in posts under moderation, there are THOUSANDS of threads in the site where you can earn your 5gc.

Most of the replies, both on pattens and in other threads, are spam - posted only to get coins. "Thanks for sharing", "grazie mille", "its lovely" are posted again and again. Such comments are often posted in threads where it doesnt even make sense, which makes it clear that the replier didnt checkwhat they were replying to.
If leaving the spam replies out of the moderation area helps the moderators, I fully support the replies being removed - and if a punishment of -10 coins helps, I fully support that, too. Here someone expresses his enthusiasm about a new design and is punished for it.

The current comment system creates a "spam" problem. There is no meaningful conversation, all people want is to leave a generic thank you comment and get their 5gc.
This creates all this problems:
* repetition replies
* having rules about "comment" or "reply" buttons, which hinder a natural thread of conversation.
* no real conversation happens, all there is is empty "thank you spam" all over the place
@Turquoise is it too much to ask for the users to wait some hours until the pattern makes it to the right forum? They have thousands of threads in the site to comment on.
Anyone that knows a bit about SEO already knows this sort of commenting does not help the site search engine results at all, lets face it, what we do here gets this site banned from the normal internet.

I think a warning/tip (no comments here) would avoid annoyance and frustration. Here someone expresses his enthusiasm about a new design and is punished for it. This is not a good solution, and certainly not in the spirit of PinDYI to attract new members. I have also done this when I see this is a duplicate, but will not do it again.

To be clear, members are permitted to reply anywhere on this site. The rule is: No spamming with repetitive replies in a single thread. However no area is off limits here. Members have many ways to report something wrong. In fact, reporting in the thread itself is not the best way as was pointed out here:
