Favourite heel for socks?
What is your favourite heel for socks? Some people prefer heels with heel flaps, some prefer short-row heels.
I first learned to knit a heel-flap heel. This is still my heel to go if I dont want to think a lot. I dont have to look up a pattern to knit a heel fitting up to now all people who received socks from me.
Then I learned to knit a short row heel. First I did not like it, because I have a high instep and the heel did not fit. And I dont like how the german double stitch looks in my knitting. But I learned different ways to work a little gussset also to short row heels and tried the technique of turning the short rows as described in the Fish Lip Socks. Know I can also knit fitting socks with short rows and a nice tidy looking fabric.
I also tried several other heel options, even starting the sock from the heel knitting up to the cuff and then down to the tips...
What is your favourite heel and why?
How do you decide what heel you knit for a new sock?
Do you use enforcement for the heels? Вяжу пятку самым простым способом, так, как в школе еще научилась, укороченными рядами. Im a fan of a heel flap and gusset. Ive done both an after thought heel and a modified version of it as well. I so much prefer the modified version. Ive also tried a flugel heel which is interesting and fits me well too! I think preference for heels has a lot of do with foot and heel shape. I just find that heel flap heels dont move around my foot as much, which is preferred when wearing socks and boots!
I usually do short rows, both toes and heels, toe up Edited by pitussa at 2024-4-23 14:44

EDIT: German Short Rows. So easy it feels like cheating LOL
This is about the foot not about what i like. It is unfortunate each foot is like fingerprint. The tall foot needs deeper heel like heel flap and gusset. The shorter heel is happy with a short row heel. The fish lip heel requires a steeper foot that is also short. It is difficult to make the sock for gifts because to measure the foot of a person removes surprise portion of gifting experience. I prefer the short rows method, it seems the most intuitive to me. THANK YOU VERY MUCH Im a big fan of the Afterthought Heel.I did the usual heel flap for ages and once I discovered Afterthought, I havent looked back.It fits my foot better, and looks so nice! I started with heel flap and gusset, then for a while used German short rows. Now Im using Fish Lips Kiss heel and its really good for me, no holes at the edges and perfect fit. gracias por compartor muy lindo me encanto Short rows heel! German short rows for me! They are so simple and reliable! I usually do a heel flap, with the eye of partridge pattern. I didnt always use reinforcement, but one time I knit a pair of socks with yarn without nylon in it, and wore straight through the heels! So now I use reinforcement.
