My first jumper - Step By Step Sweater by Florence
Edited by Jaguar at 2025-2-14 08:53I wanted to start knitting something that made me excited and learn as I go. I've almost finished the collar ribbing, but want to do the folded collar version and I'm a bit nervous.
Does anyone have advice on:
1) getting a tighter 1x1 rib? Mine looks so laddered up close
2) making the folded collar process easier? I haven't done a provisional cast on but my cast on is loose
Thanks!
Hello, thanks for sharing your work!
For what I understand, you can get a tighter look (especially if you work a bit loose) with smaller needles, you can try sizing down and see if you meet gauge :)
I'd recommend to make a sample square if you haven't already: you'll get more confident around knitting the stitches and get a better understanding of the gauge/how your garment may fit. It's something beginners (such as myself) tend to skip, but it has proven useful :)
For the folded collar, you're doing great in trying to challenge yourself with a provisional cast on, I think there is less chance of missing stiches this way. You can try to watch some youtube videos to see how it's done. For example: Seam a Folded Collar Neckband from a Provisional Cast On by woolbird.
Hope that helps :) great work! Very nice ! very nice :o) Very nice! When the whole sweater is done, you may also realize that you don't even notice the little things that were bothering you while knitting :) It may seem too loose up close, but when you see the whole fabric it's gonna be fine. Check your gauge and if it's fine, just trust the process :) Very nice ! Thank you very much Great start! Keep going!
For tighter eyes use thinner needle
You can use the knit stitch twisted :) Brazinhaa replied at 2025-2-6 19:03

Oh interesting! Would it make the neck less stretchy? Worried it won’t go over my head ;P ratatootie replied at 2025-2-6 19:44

I think the problem is the cast on. If you want you can fold the collar after :) I like your work! After washing it will be some neatly. Don't worry. and Twisted rib will help you. Great work! Thank you very much!
