Choose a small pattern, with few colors and a fabric with a large weave, so the stitches will be easier to see and count, Aida is a good fabric for beginners. You can also prep your fabrid by counting the threads and making a line on every 10th stitch (a water soluble or heat erasable pen are useful for making non-permanent marks). Then start stitching. There are many ways to start, but i like to double thread my needle, so I can use the loop method. Once you've done all the stitches or run out of thread, weave in the last bit of thread and start over with some more.
