Thread count in linen

Edited by BoingBoing at 2025-5-11 10:51

For those cross stitchers who use evenweavelinen for their projects!
I am from the US and when buying somelinen online from Europe I was doubfounded to see in the description of thethread count the word “ply”. I used to see something like “32 count” and not “12.8 ply”. It turned out that there is a difference inindicating thread count between UK, Canada, US on one side and Europe on theother side.

Here's an explanation from another memberof this Forum:
"In order to find out how many ply are in a given "count" linen fabricyou might apply the formula:

(number of counts) x 10 : 25

For instance a 28 count fabric corresponds to 11.2 ply
32 count = 12.8 ply
36 count = 14.4ply

and so on.

A 13 ply fabric may be used for a pattern stitched on 32 count linen."
So I followed this advice and wentahead with my purchase. You can see the linen I ordered from Europe here: https://www.pindiy.com/thread-656456-1-1.htmlWhen it arrived to the US,I checked and measured every piece, and here's the result: 12ply = 30 count, 13 ply = 32 count, 15 ply = 40 count.
Hope it helps!
