Need help regarding cotton yarn
Edited by anniekins at 2025-6-30 08:16I made the Odette top by moonandbaileys with 100% cotton. The problem is I made the hand part according to measurements but its too tight now. I took me a long time to make the full sleeves. Is there any chance it can expand so I can fit ?

Cant even slip my arms through it so thats a big problem
I don't want to upset you, but I'll tell you my experience. I made a mistake like that too. I tried to save the situation and did everything that was recommended above. Yes, I stretched my product, but only a little. But the thing is that I could fit into it from the very beginning, it was just uncomfortable to wear. And if you say that you can't even put your hands in there, then it will be difficult to fix anything.
Try wet blocking it and stretching the cotton to the desired finished measurements while it's still damp, then pin it and let it air dry in place. Make sure the pins you use won't rust! If you're using multicolored cotton, there's a chance the dye will bleed and miscolor other areas. There are a lot of tutorials for wet blocking online, try searching "wet block cotton". Crocheting is not exactly my favourite activity, but does the pattern also include information on the stitch gauge?
Is your own gauge far from the measurements given?
I can't give you much hope that it can be worn after soaking and aggressively blocking.
I'm a knitter and have always found that 100% cotton leaves virtually no room for stretch. pitussa replied at 2025-6-6 21:13
Oh, I see the issue, looking at the top

The pdf is very beautifully made but I did not realise how strechable the yarn needs to be for this kind of fit. The palm doesnt fit through the wrist area which is generally smaller for poeple.

Those are some tight sleeves... I think the designer does not know what she's doing, tbh. Inside the pattern you can see (1st pic) how badly it fits on her, even. Her underarm!!!! pitussa replied at 2025-6-6 17:24
Cotton has very little "give" (elasticity).
Was the pattern intended to be crocheted with wool?

Blocking might help (but I have little faith). You could always get it wet and then wear it until it is dry. It would stretch exactly where you need it to stretch I woult soak it wet and then blocking / streschinf it to the measures you want. Let it dry and then try on again.
