The OXS (Open XStitch) file format

From 2021 onwards, we added a new menu item in the Import/Export menu

‘Export to OXS file format’

The ‘Open’ dialog will also allow you to open such files.

OXS is a new file format, designed by Ursa for use by any cross stitch software ; here is why one is needed…

Purpose of the new Format:

Cross Stitch software for the home computer has now been around for over 30 years.

During that time, suppliers have come and gone, and no doubt new software will be developed in the future.

Throughout the history of this kind of software, each software manufacturer has created a file format that was suitable for their individual needs.

They have different file extensions.

eg .CHART, .XSW, .PAT, .WXS, .SCC, .CHT, .MOTIFand many more exist, and they are all different.

Invariably, this file format was a binary one (you can’t understand it just by looking at it) - sometimes using ‘standard’routines from the development language, sometimes using custom developed routines.

The file formats were proprietary/secret, and unless details of the algorithm used to create these was shared, one software product was unable to make use of data created in another.

Rather like having each product speak a different language without an interpreter.

This has meant that designs created in software packages such as EasyCross, or Myriacross, to name just two companies that ceased trading, can now no longer be opened or used in any software product that is still on sale.

Effectively that work is now lost, and needs to be created from scratch, which is a huge shame, and no doubt frustrating to people who invested time with those apps.

As time goes by, this will happen more and more.

Similarly, anyone who wishes to switch to a new or additional software product will find that work created on one package might not be able to be used in another - it must be recreated.

The Open Cross Stitch (OXS) file format is an attempt to break down the barriers that exist between these software packages, so that (if need be), any software package can create a file that can be understood by any other package.

The COVID pandemic brought home the fact that nothing lasts forever. This is our way of future proofing your work.

At a minimum, it will allow designs created using Ursa Software products to be understood by other products or suppliers in the future.

It is our hope that this format will be added to other supplier’s products (it is not a big job), so that if/when a supplier goes out of business, designs created using package X will still be usable in package Y

It can also allow any software available now, to share files with any other software on the market, (if the makers choose to add the facility).

DP Software has adopted the feature, as has Cross Stitch Saga and other mobile apps.

New software in the future could be developed more quickly, and potentially new services could be developed, - making use of the design work intended for cross stitch but with an application elsewhere, such as tiling, rugs, paving, lighting or more.

And a market / library of charts can be created that has a larger number of potential users, since every software product could ‘speak a common language’

The file format (for developers) is documented online at

ursasoftware.com/OSXFormat

...and indeed the file format itself specifies that instructions on how to use it will be included in the first 30 lines of text which it contains - so even if Ursa closes, or the web site is unavailable, an OXS file will still be usable by anyone who opens the file in a text editor or XML viewer.

The OXS (Open XStitch) file format

I'm using an app Fantastitch, and it can't open OXS files, It didn't reconise the pattern, but works perfectly with XSD files. I make a pattern with Macstitch and save it in OXS file format with the hope that the fantastitch app will open it, but no. So is there anyway that my pattern can be saved in XSD file format?
