HOw do i stitch these stitches?

Looks like they want you to split each single stitch into four, which would be petit point (much smaller stitches).  
Try spitting it into four, it would be easier on linen, but it can be done on most fabric, you have to puncture the fabric if its aida.
Use one strand for these stitches so they are not too bulky.

A lot of the mirabilia designs use smaller stitches for fine features, such as faces.

Those are called Petite Cross Stiches. You stitch them the same way you would stitch a regular cross stitch, but over one thread rather than over two (which means the design would best be stitched on even weave fabric rather than Aida).
