As you leave comments, open new threads, upload patterns etc you get gold coins. When you want to download a pattern it says under it how much the pattern costs. Click on the pdf and agree to pay for it, next time you click on it your download will start. Im fairly new as well, if there are other rules Im not aware of them yet. This is how I did it so far.
Welcome! Each day you log in you get 50 coins so thats an easy way to save up. Also if you post patterns or comment on posts you will also get gold coins. You purchase patterns using gold coins and to download it you will need to pay again (around 30 gold coins). Hope thats helpful :)
Dont forget to do your hourly tasks! If you are active on the board not only will your gold coins go up, you will level up also which means more coins per hour.
