Crafting Themes

So.... when crafting items for special occasions do you go with the theme or choose no theme so the item can be used year around without the stigma of that "occasion" being attached to it?

I am making/planning a couple of gifts for a friend to give her granddaughters (they will be a surprise to her and her granddaughters) for Easter and I am pondering whether to make them Easter themed or just something general in case she doesnt get to visit them come Easter.

What do you do?

Why not pick something that will fulfill both, (Like a bunny or chick, doll with Easter hat that can be removed, etc.)
