Could you be so kind to add a description of what sort of vessel is each of them --if it is not much to ask for ofcoursely, Caro!
(with papas support/help for sure)

There are two kind of ships. One can transport only dry cargo, and the other one can cary wet sand and mud.
This ship is specialy made for wet sand and mud. Other ships will sink when cary mud and wet sand. This one not.
This ship has double walls,so it floats better.

Well, there is in fact not much different. People who drive a boat/ship for their proffession call it a ship.
Other people, what we call,,shore people" call it a boat.
When we are navigating with our pleasure boat and we see a commercialship coming from the other site,we always say, look there is a ship coming from the other way. So the other person knows, that it will be a commercialship.
When there is a pleasure boat coming,we say, there is a boat coming. So hé knows, there is a small boat coming from the other site.
Its just a way of speeking from profecinals and non professionals.

Hi Caro, thanks for the clarification.. but if commercial = ship and pleasure = boat, then what about a steamboat? (saint Nick is about to arrive again on one).. those are/were used for commercial purposes.

Its the same with ,,duwboot",,,vrachtboot"  some call of boat, others ship. I have no explanation for that. I think its coming from the past.
Its the same with window in dutch. You can name it raam,venster,ruit.... It means all the same, but someone calls IT this, another one calls it that.
