Okay, so... Im very new! Hello, hello! (Nihao, konnichi ha, yahalo, etc.)

Im really interested in miniature and micro work, in so much as the designs I choose are reduced to their minimal recognizable elements. Not working on mesh or organza, just 18/22 Aida and designs less than a few inches square. My problem is this: how to mount them?

Small wooden hoops are an elegant and cute solution, but theyre scarce around me and often too big for what I need to frame. The smallest I can find is a 3-inch circle. I know how to frame on 3/8 inch thick foamcore board, but thats actually too thick for some of these things... is there some creative solutions you know of to frame tiny things? Can you frame on small wooden blocks? how to build micro frames?

Please share with me anything youve got, even if it relies on scrap and recovered materials. Whatevers out there, I want to learn it all.

Thank you!

I thank you for your brainpower. :loveliness: I know its odd, but theres got to be some common household item one can use to frame tiny stuffs. Some that Ive tried (which arent the best solutions yet) include:

ROUND
- jam jar lids: hard to sew the fabric taut around a circle, but can be done.
- bottlecaps: like jam jar lids, but even smaller... this is painfully hard to do. -_-;
- slices of wooden branches: I like doing this for ornaments, they turn out very nicely! Still, these are hard to find in shops, and I live in a desert where true "wood" is hard to come by, so...

RECTANGULAR
- heavy card: This looks... I dont know, kinda chintzy.
- old alphabet blocks: great for ornaments, but not for things that are supposed to look like teeny tiny wall hangings.
- unfinished wooden craft shapes: can either work really well or really poorly, depending on the type of wood. Its tough to find pieces that are both thin enough to be the right proportion and soft enough to tack into without splitting the wood. Plywood NEVER works right. -_-*

Thanks to all readers/ponderers of this thread. ^^

I love the idea of doing micro patterns. If and when I decide doing it, I think I might ask my husband to build me miniature frames with balsa wood.

HI,
I dont know if you are still wondering how to do this, but ok....

I make a hole in a piece of carton then I fetch the fabric with strong tape on the carton. I use the piece of carton as a frame.I use tape or I stitch it on the carton.
Another solution is,to make a hole in an old cloth. Stitch the fabric into the hole and then put the cloth in the hoop.

Good luck.

Thank you! Using the old cloth is a good idea to fit a large frame to a small work. Unfortunately, I meant a frame for showing, not just working...  Details Reply Post time 2015-5-25 13:28

Mason jar lids .. the kind for canning with a ring and an insert. Wrap your item around the insert with some padding and mount in the ring ... makes cute ornaments tool.
