I dont use mohair for these specific reasons (Im alergic to it as well :P ), but you might try a substitue to get the same effect. Surri Alpaca is one fibre that is recommended quite a bit as a substitue for mohair.
The Woolly Badger has a great write up on different fibres and yarns that can be substituted for mohair on her blog that was recently posted which you might like to check out. Just do a google search for the "the Woolly Badger mohair substitute" and you should be able to find it right off since we arent supposed to post direct links offsite.
Unfortunately if you want to knit with mohair you have to deal with all the drawbacks that entails, but if you are open to a substitute, you can still have the effect, but not as many hassles. You just have to be open to trying something new.
