I prefer the short rows method, it seems the most intuitive to me.

If I had to choose, I’d say I’m quite partial to the classic heel flap and gusset. There’s just something so satisfying about those neat little flaps hugging the heel, like a cozy little sock hug for your foot. It feels sturdy, traditional, and I just love the way it shapes around the ankle—plus, it’s perfect for fixing up if your socks get a hole (which, trust me, mine have, thanks to some enthusiastic gardening).
That said, short-row heels have their charm too—so sleek and smooth, like the ballerinas of the sock world. They’re quicker to knit and great if you want a nice, seamless finish. But sometimes I miss the little bit of texture and extra “oomph” that a heel flap brings.
Honestly, whichever heel you choose, your feet will be wrapped in love—and that’s what really counts. And if you ever want to chat about sock patterns while your cats supervise, you know where to find me!

I also love the afterthought heel for the freedom it gives me to make socks in the round without worrying too much about heel shaping as I go. I think it really depends on what you’re looking for—are you after a perfect fit? Go for the heel flap and gusset. Want convenience and a bit of sock magic? Afterthought all the way.
