Question about the Bounty

When I post a bounty on a certain pattern, I can see those points taken out immediately. Even before the bounty is solved.

Suppose, I wait and wait and nothing happens with my bounty.
Suppose I find the pattern somewhere else and I share it here. The bounty is solved.
Of course, I cannot get a reward for myself, it's clear. But do I get my points back?
Or are they lost forever?
