Pick up and knit stitches

Have you got some tips on how to pick up and knit stitches especially for armholes. Sometimes when I do this the stitches are not so easy to identify especially where I cast off 1 or 2 stitches to decrease the number of stitches near the armhole. Also, sometimes tiny holes appear when picking up stitches.

I always use a provisional crochet cast on for underam sts. There's a very pink knits tutorial in yt, iirc.
