Does anyone have any knitting software to share? Like Design A Knit? I have Knitware but the company doesnt support it any more and my unlock key is on an old computer I had so I can install the CDs but cant use all the features. If I could, Id be able to upgrade it to work with Windows 8.1. Thanks.

Knitting software can be a great way to plan, design, and organize your knitting projects. Here are a few types of knitting software that might interest you, depending on what you’re looking to do:
1. Knitting Design Software:
  • Knit Companion
A popular app among knitters, especially for following patterns. It allows you to annotate your patterns, track your progress, and keep everything in one place. It works with both PDFs and custom patterns.
  • Stitch Fiddle
A free online tool for creating knitting charts. Whether you're designing a simple cable pattern or a lace motif, this is a wonderful way to visualize your ideas before you start knitting.
  • Designer’s Workshop by Yarnspirations
For those who want to design garments or accessories, this tool allows you to design, visualize, and calculate yarn requirements. It’s perfect for anyone looking to create custom knitting patterns from scratch.

2. Knitting Pattern Management:
  • Ravelry
While it’s not technically “software” in the traditional sense, Ravelry is a fantastic platform for tracking your knitting projects, managing your yarn stash, and discovering patterns. There’s a whole community aspect to it as well, so you can see what others are making and get inspired.
  • PatternSync
A great way to store and organize your knitting patterns digitally. You can create folders, keep track of your progress, and even print out patterns with your personal notes and adjustments.

Sure! I don’t have any knitting software to share (like DesignaKnit, which is paid and copyrighted), but I can definitely recommend some options. DesignaKnit is great if you’re into both hand and machine knitting—it does garment shaping, stitch pattern design, and even interactive knitting, though it’s pricey and Windows-only. If you're just doing hand knitting, there are simpler (and sometimes free) alternatives like StitchMastery for chart work, or KnitBird for basic pattern design. For budget-conscious folks, Stitch Fiddle online is a fun place to play with charts, and some even use Excel creatively! It really depends on whether you’re charting stitches, drafting garments, or working with machines. Let me know what you’re hoping to do—I can point you to the best fit!

Ive been looking for something that renders a 3D model based on pattern input - in real time. I think virtual knitting would be great for pattern making. Anyone know of something like this?

What can you do with this software? Sometimes I chart patterns but I use a spreadsheet or digital graph.

Comments

You basically give it measurements, the yarn gauge, tell the program what you want you to knit - type of neckline, etc., and it drafts you an original pattern thats your size.  Post time 2017-2-9 06:44

can this program be used for a knitting machine also

Comments

It sure can...thats one of the cool features. It drafts patterns for hand knits and knitting machines using whatever yarn you choose.  Post time 2017-2-9 06:45

I know this is an old post but Im hoping to keep it alive.  I have Silver Reed machines that havent been fully used because I dont have DAK.  Been looking for it for years now.  Hoping for the Lace Tools too.  Unfortunately every site that has the software listed for download seems to be a fake.  If anyone has a working copy please share.

I actually had a kind of working copy but for whatever reason the program didnt fully work. I have Knitware but the site wont let me upgrade it to Win 7/8 (even though they have a way to do it).  Post time 2017-2-9 06:41
