Hi, it is hard to find this where I live, does anyone have good suggestions for an alternative that is comparable? Thanks

I’m having the same issue. Have you tried EBay or Amazon? It’s there but the postage to where I am makes it too expensive. Can I ask what you want to use it for? I am making some felt embroidered ornaments and have tried freezer paper, I find this too thick to stitch through neatly. So I thought outside the box and am now experimenting with baking paper. I used the freezer paper as a backing to make the baking paper easily printable, so no hand tracing, peeled the freezer off the baking paper pattern then attached to the felt. Much easier to stitch thru but still needs lots of practice for even and neat stitching and can only be used once because it has to be torn away from the work. Just like stitch and tear but I had it in the pantry it was old so I thought why not give it a try.

I assume you are meaning the 12wt thread for stitching. I have used it on occasion but not much. Too expensive for me.

I have dyed my own DMC floss using rit dye. It came out great. It's the same concept as dyeing fabric. Mix the dye the color you want and apply to the floss with a spoon. You can mix up small batches of different colors and apply it to the same thread to make your own variegated floss. You do not have to use just white floss. Any of the other lighter colors work too. Say take a lighter color of green and add red... Christmas floss.

There are some You tube videos online you can watch how they do it. Also to dye your own fabric. They are very thorough in explaining the process. Do make sure you put the vinegar and salt in the dye batch. It does help set the dye so it does not bleed. I have had no issues when I do that.

One secret I found was to tie a loose knot in the middle of the hank of floss and pre-rinse it before dying the floss. Keeps it from getting tangled when you finish the dyeing the floss and do your final rinse. Untie the knot and lay out the floss to dry. It sometimes takes a good 24 hours to dry. I lay them on white paper towels to dry initially for about 30 minutes to see if any dye has bled. If so I rinse again and repeat. I have not had any issues yet.

It is fun to do for both floss and fabric. Cheaper too. Not the expense of hand dyed fabric or floss.  It takes practice to achieve the results you want. For the fabric after I rinse out the remaing dye I hang it up to dry. Let it dry until slightly damp then finish ironing it dry. This will hopefully remove any creases you have from rinsing the fabric.

I cover my area I do it at with plastic food wrap to protect my surface. Use plastic containers that are cheap to mix my dyes ones you will not use for food.

Try it. You will have fun and hopefully save a lot of money from buying the expensive stuff online. You may not get the same results as the ones you purchase, who cares crafting is meant to fun.

Good Luck

I don’t really know what you use it for and so what properties you need it to have exactly, but a cheap soluble stabilizer that I know and have already used is Vliesline soluvlies, that is sold by meter and is 90 cm wide. if the mark Vliesline is available in your zone, you could check their products, they have other different kind of things for embroidery but I couldn’t tell you more about that because except this one I mainly use their stabilizers for sewing. I hope you’ll find soon something else in your zone !
