If you can't find them in your local store, you can buy them online quite easily. I prefer them because I'm allergic to nickel (so have to be careful with normal needles) & I find the gold eye makes threading the needle much easier. I'd like to try platinum sometime though.

I got my gold plated needles at Michaels! I didn't know that there were any benefits besides the appearance though. I prefer to use gold because they made me feel more fancy ;P

I'm glad someone posted about this.  I saw some of the gold DMC needles at a nearby craft store, but I wasn't sure if they were any good.

I'm currently using some of the Boye cross-stitch needles, but I'm going to look for the other kinds mentioned here.

I've bought a bunch from Amazon.  I can't answer your second question because I've only just started my first cross stitch :)

I've tried john james  petite gold needle, but I like pony better, it glides through the fabric really well, and the gold plated durable, not easily wears off..love it .pony it's an indian brand,  personal preference

I tried several different brands of needles: DMC, Bohin, John James and Anchor. DMC for me was the worst idea ever lol. I like the John James needles the best as I can thread my floss very easily through the eye without the thread feeling like its snagging, while Bohin and Anchor snags a bit.
