You want a needle size that will slightly open the hole in the fabric, which prevents the thread from becoming frayed. The sizes listed are just a suggestion.

Very helpful.

I made a series of needlebooks, one for each type and size of needle. I cross stitched the sizes and type names on the back of the needlebook so I can always find the right needle for the right job

Wish I would have found this years ago.It took me awhile to figure out I prefer petite tapestry needles in the smaller sizes.Those are the kind that come with cross stitch kits and I love working with them.
