Using WinRAR (Compressing and Decompressing files)

Edited by trixsey at 2012-10-1 10:40

Before I start this tutorial please remember to update your software regularly. The current version released upon writing this tutorial is v4.20. Please check for new updates periodically.
((Please only update from Winrar's own website (rarlabs) to prevent any viruses or malware infecting your computer.))

How to Compress files.

Create a new folder (on your desktop) and give it a name. Copy each page of your chart into this folder.
In this example I have given my folder the same name as my chart (Self_Pawtrait).

Open the folder and select all your files so they are all highlighted.

Right click and choose "add to archive"

Now Winrar will want a few bits of information.

Choose RAR, as it gives a better compression. Choose BEST and make the file size around 4MB (megabytes)
This will allow the files to transfer more smoothy to the forum and will also be better if uploading in bulk.

Now click OK and a new screen will appear.
You don't need to do anything here. Just wait.....

New files will appear in your folder you created on your desktop. These are your new archives. These are now ready to be uploaded to the forum.

How to Uncompress files.

Before you try to uncompress files make sure you have downloaded each attachment.
For example - this is a magazine with multiple files:-

You will need each attachment BEFORE you attempt to extract the files.
This will be the same on almost all files you encounter. Please check you have each attachment downloaded beforehand.

The extraction is very simple. It's best to make a new folder and keep all your downloaded files together.

Right click on the first archive and click "extract files"

If you click OK now, the files will extract into the same folder you made on your desktop. (And additionally will create another sub-folder) I choose this method to keep things tidy.

((Or you can choose a new location on your computer)).

How to upload your files and/or repaints is given in a seperate tutorial.
