I usually embroider eyes, you can change the expression - and it is safer for children.
Sometimes I use felt, if I have any prepared. Look at cartoon characters for different eye expressions - there are loads out there..............:)

I use a combination of safety eyes with embroidery or crochet to make a lid.

after making the eyes by embroidery or crochet with or without a button try to put transparent nail polish layer and keep it till its dry, I loved the effect, I hope this helped and enjoy :)

I embroider them... I use the "French knot". There are a lot of tutorials on youtube. They are safe and totally unexpensive :)
