I tried needlefelting the eyes on, but it was often asymmetrical no matter how I tried, and it was easy to damage needlefelted elements, so nowadays I just either crochet and sew the eyes on, or use embroidery

You can use black yarn (or another color) and add some with yarn for a highlight. It makes it extra pretty.
