Theres always going to be dirt. Unless youre using special floss, wash the project. It will also help the stitches to fluff up and look fuller.

I typically choose projects so that the full design fits into a 14-inch hoop as I also am concerned about getting my project dirty. For a bigger project doing the stitching free hand I find at the end you need to block it to make the stitching straight and this is more difficult that just moving the hoop around the stitching.

Even if theres no visible grime, theres dirt that may discolor over time. Better to wash.

I tend not to use any hoop on a small project but on the larger ones I like to use it to keep my work neat
