basicly:
x = single crochet
V = increase
W= 3 single crochet in one stitch
A = decrease

when you have 18X, etc., it means crochet all around

Did you ever figure out what X V and A are? Here is my compiled list (in US terms):
V Increase
A Decrease
X single crochet sc
O chain ch
T Half Double crochet hdc
F double crochet dc
C slip stitch slst
W 3 single crochet in same stitch 3sc
M decrease 3 stitches into 1 stitch
E treble crochet tr
K skip stitch sk

There is also a B, but I don't know what it stands for.

There is a video on youtube by Guichai Dolls titled "How to basic crochet symbols X A V T F etc." If you look at the grey description box, and expand it, it shows the definition of the basic letter symbols. You won't even need to watch the video ;)
