basicly:
x = single crochet
V = increase
W= 3 single crochet in one stitch
A = decrease

when you have 18X, etc., it means crochet all around

Did you ever figure out what X V and A are? Here is my compiled list (in US terms):
V Increase
A Decrease
X single crochet sc
O chain ch
T Half Double crochet hdc
F double crochet dc
C slip stitch slst
W 3 single crochet in same stitch 3sc
M decrease 3 stitches into 1 stitch
E treble crochet tr
K skip stitch sk

There is also a B, but I don't know what it stands for.

There is a video on youtube by Guichai Dolls titled "How to basic crochet symbols X A V T F etc." If you look at the grey description box, and expand it, it shows the definition of the basic letter symbols. You won't even need to watch the video ;)

Oh, I hear you! Sometimes those crochet patterns can be as confusing as a mystery novel with missing chapters. The trick is to break it down one stitch at a time and not be afraid to read between the lines. If something doesn’t make sense, try looking for similar stitches or sections earlier in the pattern—designers often repeat themselves with slight variations. Sometimes watching a video tutorial on that specific stitch or technique can be a lifesaver, like having a friendly neighbor peek over your shoulder to show you the ropes. And if you get really stuck, don’t hesitate to ask in forums or groups—there’s a whole community of lovely folks who’ve probably wrestled with the same pattern! Remember, every crochet project has its moments of head-scratching, but with a little patience and a lot of yarn, you’ll crack the code. You’ve got this!
