Selling on Etsy
I was wondering if anyone here have experience selling completed projects on Etsy.If so, do you sell well? How do you even price an handmade object? Is it worth it?
Id love to know your experiences, cause Im thinking about making an account there since the only projects I sold were some custom amigurumis for friends LOL I havent set up anything on Etsy yet, but Im going to be doing a few craft shows to see if theres demand. Hello KweenD,
While I havent ever sold any of my makes (Ive always used them as gifts), Ive been a member of professional crochet maker groups for quite a while. A lot of them experience either scammers (trying to access their personal information to steal them) or difficult customers (unresponding / changing their minds / opening disputes for the tiniest reason in order to get their money back) at some point. Though most of them seem to agree that the vast majority of their sales are done with nice and happy customers.
Id say it depends what your goal is... if you want to share the love of crochet and support your hobby financially, might be doable without to much of a hassle.
Making a living out of it is a whole other thing... competition is harsh : many makers sell their creations, a lot of them are very talented which makes it difficult to compete with, and globalization implies that some makers which have lower cost of living may sell at a more attractive price.
Hope thats been helpful. Competition is tough and fees can eat into your profits but on the plus side you can test the water by listing a few items for a few cents per listing. I dont think it easy to sell completed projects on Esty, but I think you should only sell the pattern of the product, its more convineces Etsy has devolved into a dropshippign heaven. People buy bulk manufactured items from China, and sell them on etsy now. Dropshipping "bros" are advertising this "hack" on tiktok and youtube.
Id suggest to find a local handycrafts selling site instead, or try to find an international one that is not etsy, but so far I have not found anything good. Amazon is also trying to send handmade stuff, but it is hard to join as a small business. I sold a few crochet pieces but Etsy took quite a lot
