Question about crediting
Edited by anniekins at 2025-6-7 10:11hello! i am pretty new to this site and i was wondering if it's okay to credit the owner of the pattern when I post my finished project on instagram/tt? kinda hesitant 'cuz they might find me suspicious knowing I bought the pattern from here, thanks!

I agree with @lycisy and @Frelldor . The more unnoticed we are, the better... I was a member of a forrum very similar to this one... and it finally disappeared. I would say if you never mentioned you didn’t pay for it and you never mentioned this site, it wouldn’t hurt to show off your finished work and if someone asked, you could say the designer of the pattern. No one would ever know it was from here if you never mentioned it TestKnit replied at 2025-6-22 23:17

Of course, even if you did just download it here, it's difficult from them to actually prove it.
But I feel like it is in poor taste to be essentially bragging that you didn't pay.

Oh, absolutely. I understand you. I wasn't trying to shame at all.
It's only for if you are posting the finished object publicly.
Some designers may offer you a free copy of the pattern, if you will test knit it for them. Mostly on new patterns or those without any ravelery projects. It can't hurt to ask them <3
Also, in Ravelry's "lovin' the freebies" group, you can periodically get paid patterns for free when the designer gives it away.

Omg I usually instantly download all the patterns I absolutely love here so they may not vanish someday. You just confirmed my fear ?

By the way, you don't 'buy' it here. This website is free to use after all. So saying you bought it...
i absolutely would want to purchase the pattern and support the designer, however i'm a broke student and i dont have a debit/credit card. plus i cant justify purchasing something kinda expensive (dollars converted to my local currency) so i guess im stuck with this website for now :(
How would anyone know where you got the pattern? If you have your real name associated with your instagram or whatever account in any way, I would not be posting projects made from patterns you haven't personally purchased with money. Pattern designers absolutely have lists of names of people they've sold patterns to - this is data that's easy for them to look up through their sales records.
If you post a project you've made under an account that uses your name, and there's no sales record anywhere, that designer is going to be wondering how you got that pattern.
If you want to post the project, I would buy that pattern, and then wait for a while (however long it took you to make the project) before posting your finished photos on social media. I'm kinda shocked at what people here are saying... of course, I wouldn't post anything on an account with my real name publicly, but that's because I value my privacy online XD I don't really think medium size designers are searching up on their databases who purchased what pattern, suspiciously looking for anyone who has stolen something- now, if you say you pirated it off this site, well... that's another story. Better to be safe than sorry, of course, but if the pattern, is, say, a Petiteknit or similarly sized designer, I would not stress about it. Most designers will just be happy you 'purchased' their pattern, made it, and call it a day. Leave it alone.
It will save you trouble.
"Buying" here is tantamount to copyright infringement. There are different countries and, depending on this, different attitudes to these topics. I used to make no secret of the fact that I consider it acceptable for people to post other people's patterns in the public domain, and I often argued about this in chats. This is my position and I defended it. But I do not advise anyone to repeat my experience. Because of this, I am banned from many groups, and some designers even refuse to sell me patterns. Therefore, it is better not to tell in public space that you are registered on this site. how will they know? Bluesy replied at 2025-6-6 20:05
how will they know?
In the two stores we all know, where files are instantly downloadable, the seller most likely does not see much personal data. And they won't know.
But those designers who sell their patterns on social networks, where everyone sits under their real names and everyone is in friends with each other and in groups, of course they see the buyer's real name and see what posts he writes.
can i mention their name in the post without tagging them? i tagged a well-known crocheter once on insta (to expose my account) and she even commented... so im kinda having mixed thoughts Frelldor replied at 2025-6-6 22:30

But those designers who sell their patterns on social networks,Wdym? How do they sell on social media? I thought you can only sell thru social media (- etsy, rav)
everyone is in friends with each other and in groups, of course they see the buyer's real name and see what posts he writes.
doesnt this mean only small creators are affected - not big ones? cause of the group -
gosh, no, that's not a good idea :dizzy:
