Ive used away waste knots on the front in crewel work and gold work, to avoid flipping anawkward large frame.
Im not sure Id trust myself with this method on my cross stitch. Id prefer that my back is messier and my front is perfect. I dont give a monkeys about how my back looks, as long as a messy back cant be seen through the front, and it doesnt cause bulges in framing.
I think we get a bit obsessed about neat backs. Ive played with right sides the same work, and yup its tricky, but cross stitch isnt meant to be this kind of work.

I usually make a knot by make one stitch on the back of another cross stitch and them passing the threads two times and pulling
