I work with several needles at a time, though only one is ever in my work at a time. I like to do HAED patterns, and I use the parking method of stitching, so I stitch in blocks. So before I start each block, I look through all the colors that are needed in it, and any that aren't already parked, I thread a needle and place it in my home made pako needle organizer thingy. That way when I need the color, I just unthread the last color I worked with and stick it into my pin cushion, and grab the prethreaded needle from the pako for the next color. So as I add more colors, more and more empty needles get stuck in the pin cushion since I don't leave the needles threaded on the parked threads, only on the ones that are not yet added to my piece. Also, when I am done with a color in one area, I end it, and then park the needle, still threaded back onto the pako for the next time I need it. Then before starting the next section I look to see which colors are going to be needed and thread all the empty needles I've placed in my pin cushion. I can have 20 - 30 needles threaded and ready to go at a time if I am working an an area of a LOT of confetti. But doing it this way lets me not have to stop to find a new color each time it is needed, I get everything ready for the next 100 stitches, and am good to go, so I can stitch uninterrupted for a while.
Also, doing it this way means all of my needles get used quite a bit, so in the last year I've only had to throw 2 out and that's because they got bent as I tried to pull them through some stitches in the back and was having a hard time so I used pliers. Since then I have learned to start and end from the front, and that is no longer an issue.
I don't use gold plated needles though - to get that many gold plated needles would be much too expensive! I do want to buy a 50 pack of bohin or john james needles sometime since right now I have about 1/3 size 28 which I prefer, and the rest are all size 26, which while I can use, I don't like as much. I just don't know which I would prefer, so I am reluctant to buy so many at once since I've been using mostly DMC so far. I know a lot of people don't like DMC because they say they get dull or bent too fast, but since I use so many needles and all get equal use, I haven't had that problem yet. |
